If you're tired of touching up your roots every three weeks, gray blending works with your natural gray instead of fighting it. At Giovannis West Salon & Spa in Mission Valley, San Diego, we specialize in the transition itself: taking you off all-over permanent color and into soft, dimensional gray blending, or all the way to your natural gray, without the harsh grow-out line.

What is gray blending?
Gray blending uses highlights, lowlights, and a soft demi-permanent gloss to blur the contrast between your gray and your color. Instead of hiding every gray hair, it lets your natural gray become part of the look. As your hair grows, there's no stripe at the part, just a soft, natural grow-out.
Gray blending vs. gray coverage
Gray coverage uses permanent color to hide every gray hair. It looks solid at first, but the regrowth shows within a few weeks, which keeps you in the chair for root touch-ups.
Gray blending softens the gray rather than covering it. Because there's no hard line between your color and your regrowth, most clients can go longer between appointments.
How the gray transition works
If you're coming off years of dark permanent color, the transition usually takes a few appointments. We'll map out the plan with you at your consultation.
Who gray blending is for
Gray blending is for women who want to look polished without living by their root touch-up schedule. Many of our clients are busy professionals who want low-maintenance, expensive-looking color that grows out gracefully.
Why Giovannis West Salon & Spa
Gray blending pricing
Gray blending starts at $200 with a master stylist. Gray blending consultations are free. Your final price depends on your hair's length and thickness, and how much permanent color you're growing out.
Gray blending FAQs
How long does it take to transition to gray? It depends on your hair's length and how dark your current color is. Most clients see a much softer grow-out after the first visit, with the full transition taking a few appointments.
Will my gray look brassy or yellow? Not when it's toned and cared for. The gloss keeps your gray bright, and we'll recommend at-home products to keep it that way between visits.
Can I blend gray if I have dark hair? Yes. Highlights and lowlights soften the contrast so the gray looks intentional, even on dark brown or black hair.
Do I have to cut my hair short to go gray? No. Blending lets you keep your length while the gray grows in.
How often will I need appointments? Usually less often than root touch-ups. We'll recommend a schedule based on how fast your hair grows and the look you want.
